It’s draft week!!!

The 2012 NFL Draft gets under way Thursday night at 8 p.m. ET from Radio City Music Hall in New York.

For the first time in a long time, I have no idea what the team will be doing with its first round pick (or picks this year. Thanks, Oakland!). After correctly predicting six of the last seven opening picks for this team, I’m still debating where they will go at No. 17.

The Bengals enter the draft with really one glaring hole on the roster — No. 2 wide receiver — and with 2011’s first-round pick invested in a receiver, I’d be surprised to see them take one again in this year’s first round. The team can really stick to its board and come out okay regardless of who falls to them and just who is going to be on the board still at 17 is a tough mystery to solve.

This isn’t to say that this roster is set and the draft doesn’t matter. The Bengals are still not an elite team and could use an upgrade at a number of positions. I’ll be upset if we don’t finish this week with more help along the interior o-line, at wide receiver and in the secondary. But there isn’t a single position you — or other NFL teams — can single out and say “this is the one they need to draft high.” That makes things difficult for teams wanting to maneuver up the board and snag the guy they want as late as possible.

The ideal scenario for me at this point is Stanford guard David Decastro at No. 17 and one of the Alabama defensive backs (safety Mark Barron or cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick) with the 21st selection. Then give me another DB, a wideout and some defensive front seven help and I’ll be a very excited blogger as the season draws near.

Just three more days of this speculation stuff before the guesswork becomes analysis. Can’t wait!
