The Bengals had two potential pieces to their offensive future in-house for visits Wednesday.
Joe Reedy of the Enquirer reported that the team met with Alabama WR Julio Jones and Florida State QB Christian Ponder. Many team observers, including Reedy, think the Bengals will go WR with their first round pick, and look for a capable rookie QB in round two or later. Reedy likes Ponder as the best option at QB for the Bengals, although he feels A.J. Green is better than Jones at WR, despite some reports that the team has Jones ranked higher.
At any rate, its more evidence that the team is going about its business and doing the due diligence necessary to prepare for the draft at the end of the month.
Judging by the type of visits, it looks like the team is focusing on quarterback, receiver, corner/safety, and running back primarily. Obviously the team needs to draft a quarterback for the future at some point with Carson Palmer’s status up-in-the-air. A wide receiver is a necessity as Chad Ochocinco may be on the outs and youngsters Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell have only one year left on their deals. You can never have enough defensive backs, and with Johnathan Joseph and Chinedum Ndukwe potentially free agents, secondary help is a must. The running back interest is likely a back-up plan. They will probably draft a back at some point, but the overriding opinion is the team will push hard to bring Cedric Benson back as the primary ball carrier.
