Bengals Add DT Tank Johnson to Roster

The Bengals have been trying for the past year to clean up their image and get away from players with troubled pasts. That moto was thrown out the window on Tuesday, as the team signed Tank Johnson, a player more known for his troubles than his play on the field.

The defensive tackle agreed to a contract, and his agent, Jerrold Colton, says the Bengals’ defensive scheme is a better fit for Johnson than his previous team, the Cowboys.

Johnson in two seasons with the Cowboys had 33 tackles and three sacks. The Cowboys brought in him while he was serving an 8-game suspension for violating the league’s conduct policy.

The 27-year-old’s issues started when he was with the Chicago Bears. He was eventually released by the team just days after he was pulled over by police in Arizona for speeding. There were never any charges in that case, but Johnson had already served a two-month jail term for violating probation from an earlier gun charge when he had unregistered firearms in his home.

Now the Bengals will hope that he’ll not have any more off the field issues with Johnson, and that he’ll finally get noticed for his play on the field, and not his issues off of it.
