Bengals OC Callahan Feels TE Eifert Making Progress Form Injury

Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan says tight end Tyler Eifert is “trending in the right direction” according to Richard Skinner of WKRC in Cincinnati.

Eifert has been rehabbing an ankle injury and sat out minicamp but did get some work in OTAs. The former first-round pick out of Notre Dame is one of the most talented tight ends in the NFL but has never been able to stay healthy, making only 14 appearances over the past three seasons. Nevertheless, the Bengals signed him to a one-year “prove-it” deal in March worth $4 million.

The Bengals just can’t seem to quit on the 29-year-old Eifert but did draft tight end Drew Sample in the second round this spring and new head coach Zac Taylor comes from the Sean McVay school of offense that features heavy use of two tight ends on the field. Eifert is expected to be used as the “F” TE, which would allow him to focus on play-making. Counting on him to stay healthy at this juncture, however, is a risky bet.
