Current linebackers coach Paul Guenther has been promoted to take over as the defensive coordinator of the Bengals.
Former Bengals DC Mike Zimmer was hired early Wednesday as the new coach of the Vikings, thus creating the opening.
Guenther began working for Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis in 2002 and has done an excellent job developing the team’s young linebacker corps, particularly undrafted free agent Vontaze Burfict.
Burfict went from an undsciplined college player no one wanted to a stud linebacker who led the team in tackles and started more games than any undrafted free agent in Bengals history.
In 2013 Burfict was named to the Pro Bowl after leading the NFL in tackles.
