The draft is now just hours away, and things are heating up.
Reports are circulating that the Bengals are very interested in trading down, and they could have potential trading partners in Houston, Atlanta, or New England, all of whom are reportedly trying to move up to grab a marquee talent like A.J. Green or Patrick Peterson.
This comes on the heels of reports that there will be a run on Quarterbacks thanks to the uncertainty around the CBA, and that as many as 7 signal-callers could go in the first round. This has to make the Bengals nervous. The assumption that the team could grab Christian Ponder or Andy Dalton in round 2 seemed fairly safe as recently as one week ago. Now both could be off the board by the mid-20’s. This no doubt alters the team’s thinking.
We think the team was working with the game plan of selecting Green, Peterson, or Julio Jones at four, and grabbing QB Andy Dalton (Jay Gruden’s guy) in the second. Now, they’ll need to rethink strategy and how bad they want the TCU quarterback.
The best scenario would be for them to move to Houston’s slot at 11, picking up extra picks in the process. There they could get Dalton and address other needs like OG, WR, S, or RB in rounds 2, 3, and 4. Barring a trade, they may be forced to take Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert at four to ensure they have a top-10 quarterback.
Of course, having said all of that they will pick Nick Fairley and say how the draft board fell exactly as they wanted it to…sigh…
