Zimmer Says that LB Maualuga Needs to Play a Lot Better

Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer expressed disappointment in how linebacker Rey Maualuga performed last season, characterizing the former second-round draft pick as lacking discipline. The Bengals want him to take over at middle linebacker eventually, but Zimmer wonders if Maualuga is prepared for the promotion. Dhani Jones is a free agent.

“He sure has to play a hell of a lot better than he did this year because he was extremely average,” Zimmer told the Bengals’ official website. “He’s undisciplined. Half of our whole defensive team is undisciplined. That’s why we give up big plays.” In general, the defense isn’t playing up to the standard Zimmer wants as they dropped to 15th in total defense from fourth the previous year. “Right now we ain’t a good defense,” Zimmer said. “I’m not worried one iota about the offense; we’ve got our own closet to clean up.”
