Zimmer Speaks His Mind On the Bengals Defense

Mike Zimmer and the Bengals didn’t have a good season last year on defense. The Bengals defensive coordinator is taking the stance that the team has made strides, and spoke about it in a piece on Cincinnati.com.

“I’m not worried one iota about the offense, we’ve got our own closet to clean up,” Zimmer said at the NFL scouting combine. “Three years ago people would be happy if we were 15th in defense. Not now. I’m not happy about it.”

With many fans hoping the defense can help carry a flagging offense that could have plenty of new players at the skill positions, Zimmer wouldn’t even describe his defense as good.

In terms of fixing a unit that finished fifth in the NFL in 2009, that means a return to many of Zimmer’s trademarks, the first being disciplined.

“It’s not scheme. It’s not personnel. It’s paying attention to detail. It’s doing things the proper way all the time. Not half the time,” Zimmer said. “This year we weren’t smart at all in a lot of crucial situations. Consequently a lot of times we beat ourselves. That’s a disappointing thing to me. I kind of got away from what my beliefs are a little bit.”
