Marvin Lewis: Combine Comments

Lewis on 2010: "It's my fault"

As the combine rolls on, the traits and abilities of this year’s class takes center stage, along with the status of the CBA negotiations.  However, with all the NFL brass located in one place, it’s also a great opportunity for the media to get interviews with coaches and personnel people, including Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis.

Among the more newsworthy revelations Lewis gave this week was that he’s shouldering the majority of the blame (as he should) for the debacle that was the 2010 season:

I don’t think I did a very good job — it’s my fault,” Lewis said today on NFL Network. “I didn’t do a good enough job. I didn’t get our guys in a position to win the football game.”

Also, despite being seen having lunch with Carson Palmer’s agent, David Dunn, Palmer echoed Darth Brown’s comments the Palmer will not be traded:

“I know my boss and owner is not going to trade him, so we just have to move forward,” Lewis said. “We’re going to put the football team together based on that. . . . I don’t know what will happen with Carson in the future.”

Of course, I’d contend that the team will be willing to move Palmer for the right price, and whether Brown sticks to his guns or not, having a franchise player who wants to quit isn’t good for anybody, least of all the other 10 guys in the huddle.

Lastly, however, Lewis is clearly planning for the possibility that Palmer will not be on the team next year.  The Bengals will get interviews with QB’s Cam Newton, Blaine Gabbert, and others this week, and taking a signal-caller at #4 overall is a possibility.
