Lewis Had Dinner With Palmer’s Agent

Could Lewis be getting inside information on trade possibilities for his star QB?

Bengals.com is reporting that David Dunn, agent for disgruntled QB Carson Palmer, was seen at a downtown Indianapolis restaurant with Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis last night.

David Dunn, in town for the NFL agents’ annual meeting, was seen sitting with Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis Thursday night at a downtown restaurant. But as Dunn left he had no comment, as he has since last month’s statement in which his client called for a separation from the Bengals.

The Bengals also seem to be sticking to their plans not to trade Palmer with four years left on his deal. But that doesn’t seem to be stopping them from interviewing the top quarterback prospects Thursday and Friday. Lewis is expected to address the Palmer situation in a noon news conference Thursday

Palmer’s trade demands were no doubt the primary topic.  while the quote above indicates the team’s public position is that they have no desire to trade the former Heisman winner, it seems likely that Dunn provided Lewis with some unofficial information.  It’s likely that Dunn gave Lewis an indication of what’s “stuck in his craw” to quote Mike Brown, as well as what Dunn may have learned under the table regardign potential suitors and value the Bengals could expect in a trade.

The fact that the team is interviewing QB prospects is not necessarily newsworthy.  They would be doing that even with a happy Carson Palmer and are simply doing their due diligence.  However, I expect that while the organization is publicly taking a hard line stance, they are privately developing alternative scenarios for 2011.
