Broncos Sign Thomas Slotting Gresham for Bengals

One minor piece of annoying news relating to the Bengals as camp began is the absence of first round pick TE Jermaine Gresham.  The team has been working with Gresham’s representation trying to secure an agreement for over a week with little success.

As a fan, we all know how these things end up.  The player will eventually cave to the team.  The question is, how many valuable practices will he miss before that occurs?

Hopefully not many.  NFL.com has reported that WR Demaryius Thomas, selected one spot after Gresham by the Broncos, has agreed to a 5-year, 15.5 million dollar deal (9.3 million guaranteed).

This means Gresham is now slotted since the player selected right before him, Houston’s CB Kareem Jackson, is also signed.  Jackson got a 5-year, 16.3 million dollar deal (13.35 guaranteed). These two deals should help set parameters and advance negotiations for getting the big TE from Oklahoma to Georgetown.

The differnece between the two contracts may only appear to be $800,000, but there is a major spread in the amount of guaranteed money (4 million dollars).

Splitting the difference straight-up would be a 5-year, 15.9 million dollar deal with 11.3 guaranteed.

Of course, its not that simple, but the Thomas signing is a positive step.
