Mid-week News & Notes

As you all are well aware, we’re entering the NFL doldrums–that dead air between the hustle and bustle of the offseason wheeling and dealing and when training camps, and actual football, start.  Its a quiet time.  A boring time.  Its when coaches get a few weeks off and writers are forced to come up with creative ideas to fill their columns.

As for me, I’m working on a few ideas, including my position-by-position offseason postmortem and grading (stay tuned for the exciting O-line review Thursday!).  While you wait anxiously for that little chestnut (or not), here’s a run-down of the other guy’s attempts at filling space this week:

Hobson notes that the Bengals have the 3rd best starter retention rate in the NFL from 2009 to 2010.  It’s based on a formula developed by another guy, although it doesn’t take math to know the Bengals have retained all the players they had worth keeping.

Our Bill Walsh Award Winnerand all around favorite assistant coach, Mike Zimmer, won yet another offseason award for his trophy case this week.  Zim-dog won the  Halas award for his perseverance and fortitude in facing adversity. Leading any Bengals defense to a 4th overall rating in any season is a monumental accomplishment, but doing it while dealing with the death of his wife makes him a legend in my book.

In other “news”, Hobson rates the Bengals’ top 5 rivalries.  As I’m sure you’ll be shocked to learn, the Browns, Steelers, and Ravens top the list (don’t fall out of your chair), so the only interesting thing is who’s at #4 and #5.  Check it out here. (Spoiler Alert!:  The team that ripped our hearts out twice also makes the list).

A very cool video here of an interview with Marvin Lewis on NFL Network.  Never heard the term “Specialness” before, but I like his sentiments at the end.

Bengal hater Mike Florio hates on the Bengals Peter King-style in his video outlook for the Bengals in 2010.  I don’t recommend picking up his super-hyped first-ever season preview rag since I’m sure its more of the same, though I’m sure Coach Lew can use it as bulletin board material and spare TP.

…and that’s all folks.  I wasn’t kidding about the O-line piece on Thursday, please do come back and check it out.  In the meantime, we have at least a month to go before things get interesting again, and with the NBA and NHL wrapping up, the sports world  is about to come to a screeching halt.  Thank God for Modern Warfare 2 on X-box live.

Good stuff but I think you are confusing Shawn Andrews with Stacey Andrews.
