Report: Reggie is Back!

Filling the second of 3 final off-season priorities I noted prior to the draft, the Bengals have signed a veteran tight end. It turns out they got the one they really wanted all along in their own Reggie Kelly.

Kelly texted Hobson at Bengals.com with the news, stating, “I’m blessed.”

This allows the Bengals to go into the season with an experienced tight end to mentor youngsters Jermaine Gresham and Chase Coffman.  Kelly is also considered an elite blocker at the Tight End position, allowing the team to continue to pursue a run-first philosophy.

Barring injuries, look for the three TE’s to make the roster to be Kelly, Gresham, and Coffman.  Last year’s starters, Dan “fumbles” Coats, and J.P. Foschi, will not be back.  The team will likely carry developmental project Darius Hill and perhaps a rookie on the practice squad in 2010.

Look for a continued push towards more 2 TE sets in 2010 with a more stable and talented group this year.

  1. dan says:

Reggie means a lot for 2010: protect Palmer from the outside rush, restore the threat of play-action, a receiving threat from the TE spot, and tutor for Gresham.

And this just in–I hear that this signing just dropped Cincy another two spots on Peter King’s Power Rankings…
