Zimmer Nominated For Another Award

It was announced Monday that Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer has been named a finalist for the George Halas Award, given to the person in the NFL who overcame the most adversity and had success in the previous season.

Zimmer, who enters his third year with the team in 2010, has taken the Bengals defense from No. 27 to No. 4 in the league in just two years. He lost his wife, Vikki, to whom he’d been married to for 27 years in early October and less than a week later, Zimmer was on the sidelines as his defense held the Ravens to just 12 first downs and 14 points in a 17-14 come-from-behind victory.

Bengals Gab honored Zimmer with the Bill Walsh Award , given to the team’s top assistant coach. Later, the Pro Football Writer’s Association named Zimmer the NFL’s assistant coach of the year.

Other nominees for the Halas Award are:

  • O.J. Brigance, the player development director for the Ravens, who is fighting Lou Gehrig’s Disease and continues to work for the organizatio
  • Joe DeCamillas and Rich Behm, members of the Cowboys staff who were both severely injured last May when the Cowboys practice facility collapsed. Both continued to work for the team.
  • Bucs running back Cadillac Williams who also came back from knee injuries to have a successful season in Tampa Bay
  • Patriots quarterback Tom Brady who came back from a knee injury and led New England to the playoffs

Zimmer, whose struggle was as difficult in my book, if not tougher than, any of the other nominees’ and performance was better, is deserving of this honor.  If he is awarded, he would join Gale Sayers (1970), Joe Montana (1988 and 1994) and Tony Dungy (2006)as a notable award recipient .
