Bengals Sign Another Kicker

In the midst of the whirling dervish that is the now 3-day NFL draft, the Bengals have made another veteran free agent signing to continue to shore up the roster.

Bengals.com announced today that the team has signed form Ohio State kicker Mike Nugent to a contract. Nugent was a second round pick of the Jets back in 2005, and brings an established leg to the competition for kicker with Dave Rayner.

Nugent’s career numbers are solid:

Career FG %: 79% (79 out of 100).

1-19 yards out: 3-for-3 (100%)
20-29 yards out: 27-for-28 (96.4%)
30-39 yards out: 28-for-34 (82.3%)
40-49 yards out: 18-for-26 (69.2%)
50+ yards out: 3-for-9 (33.3%)

Nugent was a highly-regarded prospect coming out, Nugent was the Jets kicker until the opening week of 2008, when a quad injury ended his year. He decided to test the free agency market in 2009 and ended up going 4-for-8 in limited action for the Cardinals.

Bengals special teams coach Darrin Simmons sounds high on the guy. “This is a guy that was highly regarded coming out in the draft” Simmons is quoted as saying, “and if we can get him back where he was before the injury, he’s a very interesting guy.”

This seems like more air-tight evidence that Shayne “Moonlight” Graham has shanked his last kick for the Bengals…
