Clearing up the “Coachspeak”

Editor’s note:  One of our favorite pastimes here at the “Gab” is to translate Marvin Lewis’ elusive commentary into what he really means.  Below, Chris Dunham takes a stab at today’s live chat on

This afternoon, Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis stopped by a keyboard to chat with Bengals fans via the Cincinnati Enquirer’s chat room.  Much of the conversation was the typical “Coachspeak” we’ve grown to expect from Coach Lewis. Here’s a bit of help in clearing up some of the grey areas:

ML on the top tight ends being flagged for injuriesIronically in the upcoming draft two of the better prospects are returning off of injury that they suffered. Those players and those injuries are under consideration. Translation: Though we have terrible history with nagging injuries, we will continue to roll the dice if we think the player can help us win for a year or two before falling apart. When this comes back to bite us, we’ll claim it’s an unrelated injury and that our vast scouting and research team couldn’t have missed a blip on the radar.

ML on drafting a Quarterback:  I believe in this year’s draft that we will consider throughout the three days all the positions on the team based on the value of the player Translation:  I don’t understand why people still ask about any position at draft time. It’s the same every year:  every position (except quarterback and kicker) is an early round option depending on who’s there. We’ll draft BPA and see who falls into our laps.

ML on Chase CoffmanWe were able to address some of Chase’s related injuries last fall with surgery. He’s done a good job in rehab last fall and this offseason. We’re confident he can compete for a starting job in training camp. Translation: Does anyone out there believe our run-first offense will turn the tight end spot over to Coffman?  No?  It was worth a shot, I guess.

ML on OchoCinco’s upcoming dating show:  Haven’t seen it and probably won’t. Translation:  I’m to the point with Chad, where if he shows up alive, healthy and ready to play football, I don’t care what he does in the offseason. Honestly, I try to forget that he’s even out there, unsupervised, and causing all sorts of shenanigans. That’s the only way I can sleep at night.

ML on the offensive line:   I believe our offensive line continues to be a work in progress. They played well last season. We continue to think they will progress and be even stronger in 2010. Andre Smith was not able to be as big a part as we had hoped. With the insertion of him into the lineup we should really move forward. Translation:  We’re set.

ML on repeating last year’s draft:  Last year’s draft we were drafting pretty high in the rotation. We’re drafting low this year. Last year people new the names of our picks. Translation:  Don’t expect us to be so lucky two years in a row
