Brandon Johnson Signs; Mickens Sent Packing

The Bengals announced yesterday that restricted free agent linebacker Brandon Johnson has signed with the club.  Terms were not disclosed, so it may simply be that he signed his tender.

Johnson came to the Bengals two years ago after two years with the Cardinals, for whom he was selected in the fifth round of the 2006 draft.  Johnson immediately became a valuable special teams performer and role player on the defense.  He contributed 67 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a fumble recovery and three passes defensed in spot duty on defense, and had another 12 tackles on special teams, good for second on the team.

Mickens was a late-season pick-up for the team’s practice squad. His release tends to signal that the Bengals feel good about their back-up DB’s, including David Jones and Morgan Trent.  The team will doubtlessly get at least one more during the draft.
