Texas Safety Earl Thomas to Visit Cincinnati

ESPN’s AFC North Blog reported that University of Texas Safety Earl Thomas, regarded as one of the top 2 or 3 defensive backs in the draft, is scheduled to visit the team April 1-2:

The Cincinnati Bengals will meet with Texas safety Earl Thomas on April 1-2, a source told the AFC North blog Thursday.

Thomas is a first-round prospect and widely regarded as the second-best safety in this year’s draft behind Tennessee star Eric Berry.

The Bengals have the No. 21 overall pick and safety is one area they may look to get younger and add more depth. Their defense was rated fourth, but covering tight ends and slot receivers was one of the unit’s few weaknesses last season. Cincinnati also was hit hard by injuries to veteran safeties Roy Williams (arm) and Chris Crocker (ankle).

The Bengals could go in one of several ways with the Number 21st pick in the draft, with conventional wisdom being they’ll go offense with a TE, WR, or OG.  However, a ball-hawking safety would be an effective alternative, and Thomas could instantly provide the team with better coverage skills from the position.

Analyst Wes Bunting has the Bengals getting Thomas in his latest mock.
