Bengals Cut Coles

The Bengals cut WR Lavernaues Coles today, ending his one-season term as TJ Houshmandzadeh’s replacement.

PFT announced the move at approximately 3:44 PM EST today, and the team’s official site just confirmed the news a few minutes ago.

Coles was signed to a four-year, 28 million dollar contract less than one year ago, but his production did not meet expectations.  His 43 catches, 514 yards and 5 touchdowns did not provide enough of a threat to reduce double-teams on Chad Ochocinco.  Additionally, Coles had some crucial drops that no doubt hurt Carson Palmer’s confidence in him.

This comes only days after head coach Marvin Lewis praised Coles’ professionalism and hard work.

he is now an unrestricted free agent.

This move certainly adds credence to the notion that the team will be in the market for a veteran receiver as free agency begins.  Much speculation has focused on Terrell Owens, a move supported by the gab, but the team may also pursue Antonio Bryant (Bucs), Mike Furrey (Browns), or Chris Chambers (Chiefs), or may even attempt to bring back former Bengals  Kelley Washington (Ravens) or Kevin Walter (Texans).

There are some very good restricted free agents out there as well, including Denver’s Brandon Marshall and Dallas’ Mile Austin, but don’t expect the Bengals to go that route due to the salary expectations and draft pick compensation required.
