Bengals Announce RFA Tenders

The Bengals have announced their restricted free agent tenders, which will serve to protect the team from allowing players to leave by giving the team right-of-first-refusal to match any offer, and provides for draft pick compensation in some cases if they choose not to.

Linebacker Brandon Johnson was tendered the second-round level, meaning the team would get a 2nd round pick as compensation if they chose not to match an offer sheet.  Johnson was given such a high tender based no doubt on his solid play in two years with the Bengals, where he’s been a utility backer for Mike Zimmer, filling in for starters Keith Rivers and Rey Maualuga due to injuries.  He’s also a stand-out on the Bengals coverage teams.  Johnson was originally a 5th round pick of the Cardinals.

The following players were tendered at their original round level, meaning the team would receive a compensatory selection from the signing team in the round the player was originally selected.  These players are:

  • LB Abdul Hodge
  • LB Rashad Jeanty
  • CB David Jones
  • G Evan Mathis
  • DE Frostee Rucker

Jeanty was not drafted, so the team would get no compensation if he were to sign elsewhere.

TE’s J.P. Foschi and Daniel Coats were not tendered, nor was DT Shaun Smith.  These players will become unrestricted free agents allowing them to sign with any team without the Bengals having right-of-first-refusal or draft pick compensation.

Additionally, the team tendered the following restricted free agents that were not eligible for free agency.  These players, with 3 years or less of NFL service are now the exclusive rights of the Bengals, and will have to work out extensions with the team with no option of testing the market:

  • C Kyle Cook
  • QB Jordan Palmer
  • G Nate Livings
  • OT Dennis Roland
  • S Kyries Hebert

The team’s unrestricted free agents, who will hit the market at midnight tonight, are:

  • K Shayne Graham
  • FB Jeremi Johnson
  • DT Tank Williams
  • S Roy Williams
  • RB Larry Johnson
