Surace Named Princeton Head Coach

Longtime Bengals assistant offensive line coach Bob Surace was named the new head man at his alma mater Princeton University on Wednesday.  Surace replaces Roger Hughes, who was fired on November 22nd.  Hughes had compiled a 47-52 record in ten years with the Tigers.

Surace played Center at Princeton from 1987 to 1989.  During his final season there he was named All-Ivy league and helped lead the Tigers to a 6-1 conference record and a share of the league title.  Princeton athletic director Gary Walters was pleased with his choice.  “We are thrilled that Bob Surace will be our new head coach,” Walters said. “He has experience as a player here at Princeton, as well as in the NFL and as a college head coach.”

Surace is highly regarded inside the Bengals organization, as he helped offensive line coach Paul Alexander produce a very effective line this year despite having few experienced players.  In a prepared statement, head coach Marvin Lewis had this to say, “We are sad to see Bob go but we’re excited for him and his family that he has achieved a career goal, being named head coach at Princeton.  Bob has been a huge part of our staff and of the success we’ve had. We wish him only the very best, and I know he will do a fine job for Princeton.”

“It’s a tremendous opportunity for me to return to my alma mater as head coach,” Surace said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the Bengals coaching staff for the past eight years. I have the utmost respect for the Brown family, Marvin Lewis, all the coaches and our players and the entire organization.”

So as to not disrupt the current playoff run, Walters has promised to work with the Bengals so that Surace can continue to help the team until their season ends.

Surace, 41, had been with the Bengals since 2002.  Prior to that, he compiled an 18-3 record in two years as the head coach at Western Connecticut State.  He becomes the first member of Marvin Lewis’ staff to find a head job.  Runningbacks coach Jim Anderson (Stanford) and former linebackers coach Ricky Hunley (Arizona) previously interviewed for other head jobs in recent years but were not selected.
