Statement Maker: Bengals Stun Packers 31-24

On the bright side, the Bengals won a game Sunday that just about no one thought they would win. On a down note, how nice would it be to be 2-0 right now and tied with the Ravens for the lead in the AFC North? Oh well, there’s nothing you can do about the fluke loss to the Broncos a week ago, but you can sit back and smile about the great outing they had in a 31-24 win over Green Bay on the road Sunday.

You also can start that all important countdown to next Sunday – yes, it’s officially “Steeler Week.”

The Bengals have a lot to build on, as Carson Palmer and the offense put up 319 yards, were 8-for-14 on third downs, held the ball for 33:48, and even produced 151 big yards on the ground. On defense, they held the Pack to 89 yards rushing, and also were able to hold the Pack to 5-for-12 on third downs.

The team didn’t crack even after Green Bay went up 14-7, and then 21-14 after a Palmer pick that was returned for a score. They set the tempo with Palmer making good decisions in the second half, and also used a great day on the ground from Cedric Benson, who made believers out of the Pack, going for 141 yards on 29 carries (4.9 yards per carry).

The win should by all means boost the confidence of this team, to the point where they have to start believing they have the talent to play with the big boys, which they will next week when they say “hi” to the Steelers, who lost on Sunday in Chicago. In the end, they have a lot to be proud of, but they have to not have a let down at home next week.
