Bengals Go O-Line; Take Alabama’s Smith w/ #6 Pick

andre-smith
The Bengals upgraded their O-line on Saturday, nabbing 335 pound tackle Andre Smith from Alabama with the 6th overall pick. He has long arms, can play guard as well, but will probably start his NFL career at tackle.

Here’s the Bio on Smith from Draft Countdown:

Strengths:

Excellent bulk with long arms…Very athletic…Quick and agile with great balance…Light on his feet for such a big man…A natural knee bender…Very strong and powerful…A mauler who gets an outstanding push in the run game…Stout at the point of attack and can’t be bull rushed…Terrific initial punch…Mobile with good range to pull and get to the second level…Physical and plays with a nasty demeanor…Good awareness and knows his assignments…Durable and never missed a start…Has lots of experience against top competition…Still has upside.

Weaknesses:

Just a tad shorter than you would prefer…Has battled the bulge and weight / conditioning are constant concerns…Gets careless with his technique and footwork…Does not move well laterally…Struggles with speed off the edge…Poor stamina and tends to wear down…Motor is inconsistent and doesn’t always give maximum effort…Does not have a great work ethic and has skated by on his natural talent … Immature.

Notes:

A three-year starter in the SEC…Was one of the top recruits in the entire country coming out of high school…Became just the seventh true freshman in Crimson Tide history to start in his first career game and was a 2006 Freshman All-American…Won the Outland Trophy as the nation’s best interior lineman in 2008…Unanimous 1st Team All-SEC and 1st Team All-American as a junior…Was suspended from participating in the Sugar Bowl in 2008 for a “violation of team rules” after he allegedly took gifts from an agent…Showed up at the Scouting Combine but did not participate after admitting he was not in shape and hadn’t been working out then left Indianapolis without telling anyone…Started every single game of his college career at left tackle but might be better suited for right tackle or even guard at the next level…One of the most talented prospects in this draft but intangibles leave much to be desired…Classic Boom or Bust type with the ability to be a Pro Bowler if he works hard and can keep his head on straight.
