Winners when opening the preseason on the road for only the second time in the last 10 tries, the Bengals return to Paul Brown Stadium this Sunday to open their second straight sold-out-in-advance home season.
“All in all, it was a good start,” head coach Marvin Lewis said after last week’s nationally televised 20-17 win at Green Bay. “But we’ve still got a long way to go. We’ve got to keep getting better and finish the week with a better performance against Detroit.”
The Bengals entered the Green Bay game having opened preseason on the road nine times since 1997. They had lost eight of those nine games. But they led the Green Bay game all the way after taking a 14-10 lead with 8:50 left in the second quarter, and they followed some rules of thumb that Lewis has been emphasizing since the first days of training camp.
“Keep the penalties to a minimum, take care of the football and run the ball effectively,” Lewis repeated in the winning locker room. “We basically did that, and things went our way.”
Sunday’s game is the 35th edition of the Bengals’ most-played preseason series. Cincinnati leads the I-75 summer rivalry 18-16, including 9-8 as the home team.
