Bengals wide out Chad Johnson appears to be done playing games with the Bengals, and has flat out finally come out and said you can forget him playing in the Queen City in 2008. Johnson told ESPN on Wednesday that he will never play for the Bengals again, and that recent comments by QB Carson Palmer that he would be at a mandatory mini-camp in June were never spoken, leading to this latest round of him wanting out.
“I want to make this very clear,” Johnson said Wednesday. “I don’t know where he got that. I made no assertion to Carson that I would do that. Nothing has changed from what I’ve been saying for three months that I don’t want to play for the Bengals.”
Basically this is Johnson finally reaching his breaking point when it comes to his stance of possibly playing in Cincy in 2008. The team has said from day one, with coach Marvin Lewis leading the charge, that Johnson would not be moved. Now Johnson is telling his coach, his teammates, and the fans of Cincy that he’s the one taking control of the situation, and that he won’t be back with the team.
The realtionship between Johnson and Lewis has gotten to the point where it seems that neither wants anything to do with the other. With that, control will now shift to Johnson, as even though he’s the player, he seems bent on trying to make a point, and that point is he wants out – now.
“I want to be traded before the draft, and if that doesn’t happen, I want to be traded as soon as possible,” Johnson said. “I don’t intend on reporting to anything.”
There is plenty of value in Johnson should the Bengals start the process of looking to move him. Lewis and the team have to decide what’s better – Johnson sitting at home, or the team sitting with at least some sort of draft choice and the distraction of him being on TV every few weeks saying he doesn’t want to play with the Bengals hanging finally over with.
