Bengals thin at linebacker

Ahmad Brooks, Bengals LBThe Seattle Seahawks’ Shaun Alexander has to be salivating at the thought of running against the Cincinnati Bengals today; the Bengals are down to four healthy linebackers going into today’s game in Seattle.  The Bengals are without several linebackers for the time being:

  • Ahmad Brooks – He suffered a groin injury last week against the Cleveland Browns; he will be declared inactive 90 minutes before gametime today.
  • Lemar Marshall – Also sidelined because of a groin injury.
  • Rashad Jeanty – Recuperating from a calf injury.

One defensive option available to the Browns will be the 4-2-5 defense (the “2” indicating the linebackers in the scheme).  It appears that LB’s Caleb Miller and Landon Johnson will fill those slots assuming the Bengals use this defensive option.  They have 2 other healthy LB’s, Anthony Schlegel and newly-signed Dhani Jones, but they’re relative newcomers.  Just another problem that the Bengals do not need at this stage of this season.

Hopefully, Brooks and Marshall can return fairly soon as the team doesn’t need a shortage of LB’s right now.  A suggestion to the Bengals’ offensive coordinator – instead of these quick-strike marches down the field, try eating up some clock (meaning use running back Rudi Johnson more).  That would give the defense some sorely needed rest.  The Bengals really cannot afford to lose many more defensive players, and a ball-control offense would be vital to getting the injured defensive players back sooner.
