Bengals and Lions Set to Tangle Tonight

As the Bengals prepare to open the 2007 preseason in Detroit, head coach Marvin Lewis is mincing no words about the task expected of his team. “We have good enough players, and I have great assistant coaches,” Lewis says. “We have everything we need to be one of the best teams in the NFL, if not the best team. And that’s our goal. There’s no reason why we can’t be the team that does it. We have to understand that. We have to be confident about it, but also know the kind of commitment it will take to make it happen.”

Detroit’s Ford Field should work as well as anywhere for a symbolic starting point. The last time Lewis’s Bengals were in Ford’s visiting locker room, they were donning hats and T-shirts proclaiming the 2005 AFC North Championship. They had clinched the title that Dec. 18 afternoon with a 41-17 victory over the Lions.

Tonight’s game marks only the second time in the last six years for the Bengals and Lions to meet in preseason, but Detroit remains the most-played preseason foe in Bengals history. This will be the 34th preseason meeting between the I-75 rivals.
